Mad River Valley Area

The Mad River Valley area is home to the quaint, historical villages of Waitsfield and Warren. Other Mad River towns are Fayston and, on the North end, Moretown. There are around 100 covered bridges left in Vermont. Three of them are in the Mad River area: the Great Eddy, and Pine Brook Covered Bridges in Waitsfield and the Warren Covered Bridge in Warren Village. Vermont law now protects covered bridges in the interest of conserving them as part of the historical character of the area.

History

The towns of Warren and Waitsfield were chartered over 200 years ago. The area survived on farming and mills that were powered by the Mad River until after World War II when the ski industry started in Vermont.

The Arts

The Mad River Valley has a thriving arts community. Painting, watercolor, sculpture, fine art photography, pottery, glass blowing, illustration, jewelry design, theatrical set design, and various other arts and crafts are represented in the Mad River area. Many of our local artists are products of prestigious art schools and have chosen the Mad River Valley area as their home.
