The recent Compete for a Cure Tennis event at the Bridges was an overall success thanks in part to Mother Nature’s good will. “The weather on Saturday was spectacular — putting everyone in the right mood for tennis with an awesome view,” said one competitor Katherine McDonnell from Stratham New Hampshire. This year’s event raised over $10,000 for the Vermont rural cancer support organization, Forest Moon (www.forestmoon.org) and On-Belay in New Hampshire (www.on-belay.org). In total over the past 6 years the Tennis Against Breast Cancer (TABC, Inc.) event has donated over $60,000 to smaller cancer groups in the immediate VT/NH area where this money can make a significant difference to the organizations’ annual activities.
Competitors from Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts played in both Mixed events on Friday evening and Ladies Doubles on Saturday in a round robin format. Winners advancing to the finals in the mixed category were all Valley players, Peter and Alice Tenbeau and JP Lassner and Joan Chesler. Lassner and Chesler won the close match and were awarded hand-blown glass marble-tini trophies made by Michael Egan — glass blower from Granville, VT. The ladies’ doubles had 20 teams competing in 2 levels. The A-level finalists were NH residents Becky Murray and Joanne Stone — while the champions were Montpelier, VT team mates, Debra Raymond and Lynn Syz. The B-level champions were Vermonters Jane Geider and Kristy Flynn who beat Marge McDonnell and Annette Wicklund.
Rounding out the weekend was a fast serve competition — won by Hampton, NH’s Lisa Urdanoff (85 mph) — and a Pro-Am event played on Saturday evening by Bridges Tennis Director Josh Hanna with Chris Rosenman and Houston pro Mike Derby with Jack Daly.
The Bridges Resort and TABC, Inc. would like to thank all the area businesses that generously donated items and gift certificates for the silent auction. “The auction is key to the success of the event — it raises more than half of the proceeds each year — so each and every donation is greatly appreciated,” said Jenn Macaulay, Bridges Resort. Special thanks to Paradise Deli for their support of the event and to Michael Egan (Green Mountain Glassworks) for the unique glass trophies.
